This year’s calendar features figures like Robert Smalls, who stole a Confederate ship to freedom, Esau Jenkins, who championed education and civil rights, and Jim Capers, an enslaved drummer who fought for independence.
Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver said teaching the full history of South Carolina is important to students.
“We want every single student in South Carolina to see themselves in South Carolina’s story and in America’s story,” Weaver said. “That’s what we’re here to celebrate tonight, the revolutionary contributions that so many African-Americans have made to our state.”
