QUINCY — The Bicentennial Speaker Series sponsored by the Historical Society of Quincy and Adams County and John Wood Community College continues over the summer months with programs the second Wednesday of each month.

The June 11 program, African American Churches of Adams County, begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Mary Ellen Orr Auditorium on the JWCC Quincy campus. The program is free and open to the public.

Rev. Orville Jones, senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Quincy, will focus on the establishment and growth of the county’s African American churches, beginning with Bethel AME Church.

“I will address how the First Baptist Church came to be organized, including some of the names of the church and a few of its pastors, along the journey of our history,” Jones said. “The Union Baptist Church and Pilgrim Baptist (now the Cathedral of Worship) are daughter churches of FBC.”

A “Brew and Review” session follows at 9 a.m. Thursday at the HSQAC Visitors Center, 425 S. 12th. Audience members are welcome to discuss the program and enjoy coffee and donuts provided by the historical society.
