Can Donald Trump Serve As President From Prison?

Only five months ago, Trump said he was ready to debate the Democratic nominee at “ANYTIME, ANYWHERE, ANYPLACE,” but now that President Joe Biden is no longer in the running, the GOP nominee is singing a different tune.

On Thursday, the Trump campaign said the former president will not commit to any future debates until a Democratic nominee is formally chosen. Steven Cheung, Trump’s campaign communications director, said in a statement it “would be inappropriate to schedule things with Harris because Democrats very well could still change their minds.”

As of July 26, 2024, Harris has secured endorsements from all 23 Democratic governors, more than 2,600 delegates, President Joe Biden, AND most recently former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama, according to AP News. Although Democrats will officially vote on their nominee next month, it’s clear Harris is the party’s only presumptive choice… so what’s the real reason Trump is hesitant to face Harris?

In a series of tweets, VP Harris said she is “ready” to face Trump. “Voters deserve to see the split screen that exists on a debate stage,” she wrote. According to Fox News, recent polls put Harris neck and neck with Trump, closing the gap which was widened by Biden following his disastrous debate performance against the former president last month.

According to CBS News, back in May, both Biden and Trump agreed to participate in two debates: one in June and the other scheduled for Sept 10, 2024.

During a recent press call, Trump said “I agreed to a debate with Joe Biden,” reported CNN. Even though the end of Biden’s campaign was unprecedented— occurring only five months before the general election — the GOP candidate said he believes a debate against Harris will be just as easy. “I want to debate with her, and she’ll be no different because they have the same policies.” He continued “I think debating is important for a presidential race, I really do. You sort of have an obligation to debate.”

The 78-year-old nominee says he’s willing to face Harris, 59, but he has no real plans to cement anything until after the Democratic National Convention. With Biden out of the race, Trump has now become the oldest presidential nominee in US history. He once joked about Biden’s old age, but now, Trump finds himself in the same position; this time though, he’s facing a younger and quick-on-her-feet Black woman.

Harris has rapidly racked up support and millions of dollars in donations. Her call out to the former president to debate serves as proof that she thinks she can beat him. As Trump continues to “backpedal” on debating Harris, Americans will just have to wait and see when and what the next presidential debate will bring.
