President Donald Trump, in office less than a week, is a lame duck — and that means Democrats and Republicans will waste no time positioning themselves to succeed him in 2028.
No candidate has officially declared their intentions to run for president, but with Trump unable to run again, barring a change to the U.S. Constitution, Vice President JD Vance is positioned to be the frontrunner to win the Republican nomination.
One survey showed Donald Trump Jr. as the leading GOP candidate, but he was behind selecting Vance as his father’s running mate and likely wouldn’t challenge his good friend.
“Oh, God,” Trump Jr. said. “No, no, no, don’t get me into trouble. Now we have to govern. We have to win, we have to fight. We have to get it done, we have to deliver on our promises.”
