September is Prostate Cancer Awareness month. According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the United States and is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men. Each man’s risk of prostate cancer can vary. It is recommended that men start prostate cancer screenings at age 50. Those with a higher risk, including African American men and men with an immediate relative diagnosed with prostate cancer, should start screenings earlier.

The American Cancer Society estimates about 313,780 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2025. If detected early, the five-year survival rate for localized prostate cancer is near 100 percent.

While the prostate cancer screening is free, appointments must be made in advance. To make an appointment, call 870-262-1834.

White River Health Surgery Clinic offers several treatment options for men diagnosed with prostate cancer. Men should consult a urologist to discuss treatment options.
