Listen: We really didn’t need any more evidence of the demonstrable racism and sexism of Donald Trump, the GOP and the MAGA world, but if we did need more evidence, we would easily be singing, “My cup runneth over” now that Vice President Kamala Harris is the presumptive Democratic nominee for president. Harris isn’t even the official nominee yet, but after President Joe Biden announced he was dropping out of the race and endorsed his VP, it took less than 24 hours for Bigots R Us Americans to launch an endless social media tirade against her, calling her a “DEI hire”—which she was already being called before Biden dropped out. Almost worse than the false and insulting remark, these people are taking shots at her intelligence generally and making remarks about the 59-year-old’s supposed sexual promiscuity and how it got her where she is today.
Gentle reminder: These hateful fake statements come from the supporters of a man who has had multiple wives, multiple mistresses and also who was found liable for rape–and a man whose businesses filed for bankruptcy six times–and makes not paying his employees par for the course.
First, let’s start with Trump, who got himself dragged for calling Harris “dumb as a rock,” which immediately prompted folks to point out that the commander-in-cancer-causing-windmills-and-Lysol-injections really doesn’t have room to talk.
Dumb-Dumb Donnie: Here He Goes Again
Trump accused the “fake news” media of trying to “turn ‘Dumb as a Rock’ Kamala Harris from a totally failed and insignificant vice president into a future ‘great’ president.”
First of all, it really doesn’t seem like Trump actually understands how quotation marks work. He’s acting like “Dumb as a Rock” is some official nickname Harris has been given when he’s really just quoting himself (or maybe the voices in his head, I don’t know), and unless he can point out a specific news report where someone called her a “future ‘great’ president,” his quotes around “great” appear to be the white-and-fragile projections of his own yuge insecurity.
Whatever his intent was, it backfired on X, where people largely responded by posting an endless supply of videos, photos and Trump quotes that prove calling him “dumb as a rock” would be an insult to rocks.
Remember when Republicans correctly thought–and said–Trump was an idiot? Those were the days.
On second thought, maybe Trump didn’t actually write the “Dumb as a Rock” post. I mean, there were way too many multisyllabic words that were spelled correctly.
Oh, what am I saying? Trump knows all the words.
Don’t get me wrong, Trump pivots to personal insults on everyone who he’s up against, but there are certain insults—typically the ones that involve intelligence or gender-related bodily functions—he reserves for women, and, more specifically, Black women and women of color. In this case, he’s the Trump calling the pumpkin orange as he is simply not the person who should be calling anyone “dumb.”
Next up, we have white America’s new favorite N-word alternative, “DEI hire.”
During an interview with CNN, Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) called Harris a “DEI hire” based on Biden’s pledge to choose a Black woman as a running mate during his 2020 campaign, which would almost make sense if Burchett hadn’t immediately asked why Biden skipped over “white females,” indicating that it isn’t actually the diversity aspect he has a problem with, it’s specifically Black diversity at the heart of his issue.
Regardless of Biden’s intent to select a Black woman as his running mate, Harris was appointed by the president to a position for which there is no existing diversity, equity and inclusion program. Kamala Harris has served as the District Attorney of San Francisco. She has served as the Attorney General of California. She has served as a U.S. senator. By comparison, Donald Trump had zero experience in politics or law before being elected to the highest political office in America. If Harris is a “DEI hire,” Trump is certainly a white supremacy hire.
Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-Wisconsin)—the white man who recently said he wants to return the nation to 1960s America—recently said in an interview, “It is gonna be more difficult to beat somebody who is not Joe Biden” and that “a lot of Democrats feel they have to stick with her because of her ethnic background.”
If Harris does prove to be more difficult for Republicans to beat than Biden, it will likely be because they’ve had the luxury of open insults against an elderly white man who is visibly and audibly not as spry as he was when he was a young man. Biden was low-hanging fruit because his opponents didn’t have to worry about allegations of bigotry due to the nature of their attacks. That is what changes with Harris’ “ethnic background.” After all, white conservatives have also resurrected the tired and blatantly racist “birther” movement they launched against Barack Obama in their attacks on Harris.
And, lest we forget, Harris is also a woman, which means it’s not just racist attacks that conservatives will and have defaulted to.
From Newsweek:
Several Photoshopped Harris’ head on to images of scantily clad or nude woman and implied that she could only have achieved her success by distributing sexual favors.
Other trolls focused on the fact that Harris does not have her own children, although she is a stepmother to her husband’s two children. “People without kids should not be running a country and sending other people’s kids to fight and die in war,” one anonymous X user wrote.
But another user mocked that post, pointing out that by that logic, George Washington was not a valid presidential choice either (the first president did not have his own children but helped raise his wife’s children from her first marriage). Notorious troll Milo Yiannopoulos, a Trump supporter who had a book deal and speaking engagements canceled after comments surfaced in 2017 in which he allegedly appeared to condone some instances of pedophilia involving gay men, has also been sharing graphic memes online. He referred to Harris as “Cumala” and alleged she had a “sordid sexual history.”
If you’re wondering what “sordid sexual history” Yiannopoulos was referring to, many trolls from white-and-mediocre America have cited Harris’ brief relationship in the 1990s with former San Francisco mayor Willie Brown as evidence that the former district attorney, former attorney general and former U.S. senator “slept her way to the top,” despite her extensive professional resume. (But merit eliminates the need for DEI, right?)
Look y’all, it’s already about to be a long four months until November, but it will be even longer for Black women who will be getting a constant reminder of what white nationalist America thinks of Black women and women of color in power if Kamala Harris is selected as the Democratic nominee for president.
It’s about to get real Klan-ish in these political streets. Buckle up, good people.
