While most know Idris Elba as a talented actor, his love for music runs just as deep. Before his rise to Hollywood stardom, Elba was immersed in the London club scene as DJ Big Driis, honing his DJ skills behind the decks. His connection to electronic music led him to explore different styles of music, eventually merging his two worlds of acting and DJing.

Like the rich characters he portrays on screen, Elba’s distinctive style blends deep house, hip hop and techno. A collaboration between Kevin Saunderson and Elba at this summer’s Detroit  Movement Festival continues to elevate Elba’s DJ persona.

Saunderson speaks highly of the connection. “Idris brings an incredible energy and a fresh perspective to the studio. Our sessions are about blending our experiences and creating something new and exciting. The energy is electric.”

Elba and Saunderson’s collab shows their mutual respect and vision for techno house. Saunderson reflects, “Working with Idris has been a dream. He’s a legend in his own right, and our musical chemistry is something special. We’re pushing boundaries and creating tracks that honor the history of techno while looking forward to its future.”

Saunderson’s journey to the heart of techno music is a tale of passion, innovation and relentless pursuit of sonic excellence. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Saunderson moved to Detroit, where he became a key figure in the birth of techno music. Alongside Juan Atkins and Derrick May, Saunderson formed the Belleville Three, the pioneering trio that laid the foundation for the 1980s techno movement. His influence extended beyond Detroit, creating ripples that shaped the global electronic music scene.

Saunderson’s early work with the group Inner City produced the timeless hits “Good Life” and “Big Fun,” which became anthems of the techno-house genre. Infused with danceable, feel-good rhythms and soulful vocals, the tracks capture good energy with a touch of influence from the church generation and established Saunderson as a visionary artist.

Constant reinvention and dedication over his decades-long career make Saunderson an iconic figure in electronic music. He continues to inspire new artists with his label, KMS Records, founded in 1987, proving his impact on the techno dance genre.

Emerging talents like DJ Sky Jetta and the Saunderson Brothers, Saunderson’s own progeny, are jumping into the mix, creating a musical style of their own. These acts are carving out their niche with a sound that honors techno’s roots while pushing the envelope of modern electronica.

Carmen Johnson, known affectionately as “Silly Girl Carmen,” is establishing herself as the next big sound from Detroit. Her high-energy performances and eclectic mixes earned her a devoted following. Johnson’s approach to music is both playful and profound, reflecting her deep connection to the genre. Johnson shared, “Music is about the freedom to express, to push boundaries, and to connect on a deeper level. In every beat, there’s a story waiting to be told.”

With Saunderson’s ongoing collaborations with powerhouse artists like Elba and his mentorship of rising stars, the future of techno and house will continue to spark unity amongst house and electronic music heads globally.
