It’s Don Brubaker Day: Celebrating 41 years of excellence in news, sports journalism

VICTORIA, Texas — Don Brubaker, a familiar face in the Victoria community and a veteran broadcaster, celebrated 41 years with KAVU-TV. The Houston native, who served as the station’s sports director from August 1984 until July 2020, took over as the main news anchor in late July 2020.

Brubaker’s journey to Victoria began after four and a half years in the sports department at KPRC-TV in Houston. Before graduating from the University of Houston, he gained valuable experience working in the sports departments of the Houston Post and KPRC radio.

During his distinguished career at KAVU-TV, Brubaker earned numerous accolades, including state awards for his sportscasting from the Texas Girls Coaches Association and the Associated Press. In 2010, he received the sports award from the African American Chamber of Commerce of Victoria.

In 2011, Brubaker was honored as state sportswriter of the year by TAPPS. That same year, he and his popular “Friday Football Fever” were featured in the special exhibit “Texas High School Football: More Than The Game” at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin.

Brubaker’s excellence continued to be recognized in 2012 when he received the golf media excellence award from the Southern Texas PGA.

Beyond his professional achievements, Don Brubaker enjoys family life with his wife, Cecilia, and their two grandsons, Nick and Luke.

Don Brubaker Day not only marks a milestone in his career but also honors his ongoing contribution to local sports and news broadcasting in Victoria.
