THIS IS KCRA THREE NEWS AT FIVE. THE HOLIDAY TRAVEL SEASON IN FULL SWING. WHICH AREAS ACROSS THE COUNTRY ARE ALREADY SEEING DELAYS THIS MORNING? AND WHEN EXPERTS SAY IS THE BEST TIME TO HIT THE ROADS. PLUS, WE’RE LEARNING NEW DETAILS ABOUT THE TODDLER WHO WAS KILLED IN SACRAMENTO COUNTY. WHO OFFICIALS ARE NAMING AS THE SUSPECT, AND WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE CRIME SO FAR. DOZENS OF PEOPLE REMAIN DISPLACED AFTER AN APARTMENT COMPLEX FIRE LAST MONTH. HOW COMMUNITY MEMBERS ARE COMING TOGETHER TO SUPPORT THEM THIS HOLIDAY SEASON. GOOD MORNING EVERYONE. IT’S 5 A.M. ON YOUR MONDAY. I’M BRANDI CUMMINGS. THANKS FOR BEING HERE. AND I’M MIKE CHERRY ON YOUR MONDAY. BUT FOR SOME FOLKS IT MIGHT EVEN BE THEIR EXTENDED WEEKEND ALREADY. ABSOLUTELY. WHAT? CHRISTMAS IS TWO DAYS AWAY OFFICIALLY. HOPEFULLY. HOPEFULLY YOU’RE DONE WITH THE SHOPPING. BUT I’LL TELL YOU WHAT. I SAW SOME FOLKS OUT THERE AT ROSEVILLE AND I WAS LIKE, NO, THERE’S STILL A LOT OF FOLKS BUYING AND WRAPPING. ALL RIGHT, SO LET’S GET TO METEOROLOGIST KELLY KERN RIGHT NOW THIS MORNING IN FOR TAMARA BERG. AND AGAIN KIND OF RINSE AND REPEAT. PATCHY FOG. PATCHY FOG YET AGAIN. THAT’S WHAT WE’RE DEALING WITH AS WE TAKE THIS LIVE LOOK OUTSIDE AT THE CAPITOL THIS MORNING. WE CERTAINLY HAD SOME RAIN SHOWERS THAT CAME THROUGH OVERNIGHT. THERE’S STILL A FEW OF THOSE LINGERING. WE’LL HAVE A MOSTLY DRY AFTERNOON AND AN IMPACT DAY FOR TOMORROW, AS WE HAVE A FRONTAL BOUNDARY COMING THROUGH WITH POTENTIALLY HEAVY RAIN, EVEN SOME THUNDERSTORMS AND THOSE SNOW LEVELS DROPPING IN THE SIERRA RIGHT NOW. YUBA CITY MILE AND THREE QUARTER VISIBILITY BEING REPORTED FAIRFIELD ABOUT TWO MILES STOCKTON YOU’RE DOWN TO FOUR. WE DO EXPECT THIS FOG TO GET A LITTLE BIT THICKER BEFORE IT GETS BETTER, THOUGH. STILL SOME LINGERING SHOWERS LIKE I SAID, ESPECIALLY AROUND PLACERVILLE POLLOCK PINES. AGAIN, MOST OF THIS IS VERY LIGHT AND SPOTTY. IT’S WORKING ITS WAY EASTWARD. SHOULDN’T CAUSE TOO MANY PROBLEMS FOR YOU. TEMPERATURES ARE PRETTY MILD TO GET THINGS STARTED. IN FACT, FAIRFIELD THE VALLEY ALL LOOKING AT TEMPERATURES RIGHT NOW IN THE MID 50S. THESE ARE NORMAL HIGHS FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR. WE’RE AT 34 DEGREES FOR TRUCKEE AND SOUTH LAKE TAHOE RIGHT NOW. AND AS WE HEAD THROUGHOUT THE REST OF THE AFTERNOON AGAIN, CAN’T RULE OUT A STRAY SHOWER RIGHT AROUND 3:00. MAINLY I-80 AND NORTHWARD. MOST OF US, THOUGH, LOOKING AT DRY CONDITIONS. IT’S TOMORROW. THAT’S WHEN WE HAVE THAT IMPACT DAY WITH RAIN, THUNDERSTORMS, SNOW IN THE SIERRA. COOLER TEMPERATURES AS WELL. WE’LL GET MORE INTO DETAIL ON THAT COMING UP IN ABOUT TEN MINUTES. BUT FIRST, A CHECK OF TRAFFIC WITH BRIAN. ALL RIGHT. THANKS, KELLY. TAKING A LOOK AT HIGHWAY 50 RIGHT NOW. THIS IS GOING TO BE AT 65TH STREET. AND YOU CAN SEE HERE TRAFFIC MOVING ALONG JUST FINE THROUGH THE SACRAMENTO AREA. A LITTLE GLARE ON THE ROAD THERE. JUST CHECKED IN ON CHAIN CONTROLS. NO CHAIN CONTROLS OVER THE SIERRA AT THIS POINT. IT’S ALL CLEAR UP THERE. 50 IS LOOKING GOOD, 80 LOOKING GOOD. COMING IN FROM ROSEVILLE. NO PROBLEMS THERE AND HEADING OUT ACROSS THE CAUSEWAY. ALL CLEAR IF YOU’RE HEADING OUT TOWARDS DAVIS. ONE ISSUE WE DO HAVE THIS IS GOING TO BE I-5. SO HERE’S THE AIRPORT RIGHT OVER HERE. 99 AT ELKHORN. THERE’S A BIG RIG THAT WENT THROUGH A FENCE AND OVER OFF ONTO THE NORTHBOUND SIDE THERE ON THE NORTHBOUND LANES. SO WATCH OUT FOR THAT. THEY DO HAVE ONE RAMP CLOSED THERE AT ELKHORN TO NORTHBOUND 99. THERE WERE SOME MINOR DELAYS THERE EARLIER, BUT IT LOOKS LIKE ALL IN THE GREEN NOW AND NO PROBLEMS OUT OF ELK GROVE ON FIVE AND 99 AND THROUGH STOCKTON. ALL CLEAR HERE. NO PROBLEMS ON THE 99 CORRIDOR BETWEEN MODESTO AND MANTECA. 205 IS LOOKING GOOD WITH JUST A LITTLE SLOWING ON 580 OVER THE ALTAMONT PASS. NOW, AT 24 MINUTES AND 99, A 12 MINUTE RIDE BETWEEN MODESTO AND MANTECA. AND AGAIN HERE IN SACRAMENTO, EVERYTHING’S IN THE GREEN FROM 85 TO 99 AND FIVE. AND IF YOU’RE HEADING OUT TO THE AIRPORT, I DID CHECK IN ON THE PARKING AVAILABILITY FOR YOU. IT HAS GONE DOWN SINCE LAST WEEK, OF COURSE, BUT WE STILL HAVE 1300 SPOTS AVAILABLE IN THE PARKING GARAGE, OVER 500 SPOTS IN THE DAILY LOT. AND IF YOU’RE GOING INTO THE ECONOMY LOT 1700 SPOTS AVAILABLE THERE. SO IF YOU’RE ABOUT TO HEAD OUT TO THE AIRPORT. SAFE TRAVELS AND NO PROBLEMS. PARKING. BACK TO YOU. GOOD NEWS. THANK YOU SO MUCH, BRIAN. OKAY. SO WE WANT TO SHOW YOU LAX. THE HOLIDAY RUSH IS ON THERE. BUT YOU KNOW WHAT, MIKE? WE HAVE SEEN THIS WORSE. WE HAVE SEEN MORE TRAFFIC HERE BEFORE. THE TSA SAYING THEY DO EXPECT NEARLY 40 MILLION PEOPLE TO PASS THROUGH AMERICAN AIRPORTS BETWEEN NOW AND JANUARY 2ND. SO HERE IS A LOOK AT FLIGHTAWARE’S MISERY MAP. THAT’S WHAT THEY CALL IT. IT SHOWS THE DELAYS AND CANCELLATIONS AT AIRPORTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY RIGHT NOW. THE WORST IS IN BOSTON AT LOGAN INTERNATIONAL. THEY’RE SEEING THE MOST DELAYS, FOLLOWED BY HARTSFIELD, IN ATLANTA AND NEWARK LIBERTY IN NEW JERSEY. KIND OF THE SAME. THE USUAL. OH, YEAH. TOTALLY. PRETTY MUCH THE USUAL BIG ONES. YEAH. SO IN ALL, TRIPLE A DOES PROJECT OVER 119 MILLION AMERICANS WILL BE TRAVELING OVER THE YEAR END HOLIDAYS. AND OF COURSE, THAT DOES INCLUDE 107 MILLION BY CAR. THAT IS A 2.5 MILLION MORE PEOPLE THAN LAST YEAR, JUST SHY OF 2019 RECORD OF 108 MILLION ROAD TRAVELERS. EVEN THOUGH PRICES FOR FLIGHTS ARE UP THIS YEAR COMPARED TO LAST. TRIPLE A DOES PREDICT AN INCREASE OF AT LEAST 400,000 TRAVELERS BY AIR. ANOTHER 4.5 MILLION WILL TAKE OTHER MODES OF TRANSPORTATION, INCLUDING TRAINS, BUSSES AND CRUISE SHIPS. NOW, IF YOU ARE ONE OF THE ROUGHLY 107 MILLION AMERICANS WHO WILL BE DRIVING TO YOUR HOLIDAY DESTINATION TODAY, HERE’S A LOOK AT THE BEST AND WORST TIMES TO GET OUT THERE AND HIT THE ROAD. ACCORDING TO TRIPLE A, THE BEST TIME TO DRIVE IS ANYTIME BEFORE 11 A.M. THE WORST TRAVEL WINDOW IS FROM 1:00 IN THE AFTERNOON UNTIL 6:00 AT NIGHT. IF YOU’RE WAITING UNTIL CHRISTMAS EVE OR MAYBE EVEN CHRISTMAS DAY, TRIPLE A EXPECTS MINIMAL TRAFFIC OUT ON THE ROADS DURING THOSE DAYS. 505 IS YOUR TIME RIGHT NOW. WE ARE LEARNING NEW DETAILS IN THE MURDER OF A ONE YEAR OLD BOY IN SACRAMENTO COUNTY. THE CHILD’S FATHER WAS ARRESTED IN CONNECTION TO THE DEATH. THE SACRAMENTO COUNTY CORONER’S OFFICE IDENTIFIED THE CHILD AS MICAH GABRIEL DEMBSKI. THIS IS A PHOTO FROM A GOFUNDME PAGE STARTED BY MICAH’S FAMILY. DEPUTIES SAY IT HAPPENED FRIDAY MORNING WHEN THEY GOT A CALL FOR A DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE ON VERSAILLES, WAY, JUST SOUTH OF ANTELOPE ROAD. THEY SAY THEY TRIED TO GO INSIDE THE HOME, BUT THE FATHER REFUSED TO LET THEM IN. THEY THEN FORCED THEMSELVES INSIDE, AND THAT’S WHEN THEY FOUND THE CHILD’S BODY. THE CHILD’S 28 YEAR OLD FATHER, ANDREW DEMBSKI, IS FACING SEVERAL CHARGES, INCLUDING MURDER. NO OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS ARE BEING INVESTIGATED. TWO MEN ARE IN CUSTODY IN SACRAMENTO COUNTY AFTER DEPUTIES SAY THEY ROBBED A VERIZON STORE. THE ROBBERY HAPPENED IN ANTELOPE AT THE VERIZON STORE ON WALERGA ROAD AT 745 YESTERDAY EVENING. DEPUTIES SAY THE SUSPECT STOLE MORE THAN $100,000 IN MERCHANDISE. DEPUTIES CAUGHT THEM IN WOODLAND AT I-5 AND EAST MAIN STREET. THE SHERIFF SAYS VERIZON HAD TRACKERS ON THE PHONES, AND THAT HELPED DEPUTIES CATCH THE SUSPECTS. DOZENS OF IPHONES WERE RECOVERED, AS WELL AS A GUN. MEANWHILE, POLICE IN CERES RESPONDED AFTER A CAR CRASHED INTO A BUSINESS OVER THE WEEKEND. POLICE SAY THE DRIVER WAS IMPAIRED AND ARRESTED FOR DUI. YOU SEE THAT VEHICLE THERE? CERES PD SHARED THESE PHOTOS OF THE TRUCK CRASHED INTO THE WINDOW. NO ONE WAS SERIOUSLY HURT. A COMMUNITY IS COMING TOGETHER AFTER A FIRE IN SACRAMENTO COUNTY DISPLACED DOZENS OF PEOPLE LAST MONTH. THE FIRE HAPPENED AT THE ESTATE APARTMENTS COMPLEX IN NORTH HIGHLANDS. 16 UNITS WERE DAMAGED. THREE PEOPLE WERE HURT. 40 PEOPLE IN ALL WERE DISPLACED AFTER SACRAMENTO METRO FIRE AND OTHER AGENCIES STEPPED IN TO FIND THOSE RESIDENTS PLACES TO STAY. AND THEN YESTERDAY, SAC METRO TEAMED UP WITH THE SACRAMENTO COUNTY SHERIFF’S TOY PROJECT TO GIVE THE KIDS AN EARLY CHRISTMAS. I THINK IT’S ACTUALLY A MIRACLE WITH ALL OF THIS. IT’S REALLY HELPFUL. IT’S A GREAT WAY TO BRING THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER AND MAKES US FEEL LIKE WE WEREN’T FORGOTTEN OR SWEPT UNDER THE RUG. IT SHOWS THAT THERE REALLY IS GOOD PEOPLE OUT THERE TO HELP OTHERS. NOW THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION. WELL, DOZENS CAME TOGETHER FOR AN EMOTIONAL GATHERING IN DOWNTOWN SACRAMENTO, ALL TO HONOR THE LIVES OF UNHOUSED PEOPLE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES LAST YEAR. IN ALL, MORE THAN 100 UNHOUSED PEOPLE HAVE DIED THIS YEAR IN SACRAMENTO COUNTY WHILE USING OR WHILE LIVING ON THE STREETS. ORGANIZERS SAY THE GOAL WASN’T JUST TO REMEMBER THE LIVES LOST, BUT ALSO TO COMMIT TO IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR THOSE STILL LIVING ON THE STREETS. WE SHOULD BE TAKING CARE OF ONE ANOTHER, AND WE NEED TO, AS A COMMUNITY. YOU ARE THE POWER TO DO THAT. THERE’S A LOT OF REALLY HORRIFIC AND TRAGIC DEATHS IN SACRAMENTO ON THE STREETS. BUT ALL OF THEM WERE PEOPLE FIRST, PEOPLE THAT WE ALL LOVED. NOW, ACCORDING TO THE SACRAMENTO COUNTY CORONER’S OFFICE, THERE HAVE BEEN 141 DEATHS IN THE UNHOUSED COMMUNITY THIS YEAR. THAT’S DOWN FROM LAST YEAR, WHEN THE COUNTY REPORTED 307. HAPPENING TODAY, THE MODESTO GOSPEL MISSION IS SET TO FEED 3000 PEOPLE AS PART OF A CHRISTMAS LUNCH AND GIFT GIVEAWAY. WE SPOKE TO JASON CONWAY, THE CEO OF MODESTO GOSPEL MISSION, TO HEAR MORE ABOUT THE EVENT AND THEIR NEED FOR DONATIONS AND VOLUNTEERS. IT MEANS EVERYTHING FOR OUR COMMUNITY AROUND, AS YOU KNOW, AS YOU GO TO THE STORES, YOU SEE THE COST OF INFLATION. A LOT OF FAMILIES DON’T HAVE ANYTHING LEFT, AND THAT’S WHERE THE MODESTO GOSPEL MISSION COMES IN AND PROVIDES A PLACE FOR FAMILIES, ALL FAMILIES. YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE HOMELESS TO COME IN AND ENJOY CHRISTMAS. THE CHRISTMAS AT THE MISSION EVENT IS HAPPENING TODAY FROM 11 A.M. TO 2 P.M. AT THE MODESTO GOSPEL MISSION. THAT’S AT 1400 YOSEMITE BOULEVARD. DOZENS OF FAMILIES IN SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY HAVE EXTRA HOLIDAY PRESENTS, ALL THANKS TO A LOCAL TOY DRIVE. SAN JOAQUIN REGIONAL TRANSIT DISTRICT PARTNERED WITH THE AFRICAN AMERICAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OF SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY FOR THEIR ANNUAL TOYS FOR TOTS DRIVE. THE EVENT TOOK PLACE ON SATURDAY. THE GOAL IS TO SUPPORT UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON. THE GIFTS ARE INTENDED FOR CHILDREN RANGING FROM SIX MONTHS TO 17 YEARS OLD. ORGANIZERS SAY THEIR FAVORITE PART IS SEEING FAMILIES SMILE. WATCHING THE KIDS SMILE, AND THEY WAIT. AND THE PARENTS AND YOU CAN REALLY TELL THAT THEY ARE REALLY, REALLY GRATEFUL FOR THE GIFTS. AND THAT IS THE MOST CHERISHED THING FOR ME, IS TO SEE THE KIDS SMILE AND ENJOY THE TOY. THIS IS THE THIRD YEAR REGIONAL TRANSIT DISTRICT EMPLOYEES HAVE DONATED GIFTS FOR THAT DRIVE. WELL, IT IS 510 NOW. TIME FOR ANOTHER CHECK OF KCRA 3 WEATHER AND TRAFFIC EVERY TEN MINUTES. LET’S HEAD OVER TO METEOROLOGIST KELLY KERN AND KELLY. FOR PEOPLE WHO MAY BE OUT AND ABOUT TODAY, WHAT DO THEY NEED TO KNOW? WELL, WE ARE LOOKING AT A FEW STRAY SHOWERS OUT THERE RIGHT NOW. AND OF COURSE SOME AREAS OF MORNING FOG, BUT THERE IS A SLIGHT CHANCE FOR A LITTLE BIT MORE LATER THIS AFTERNOON. RIGHT NOW, THOSE SHOWERS CONCENTRATED AROUND POLLOCK PINES AND PLACERVILLE. THEY’RE VERY LIGHT. THEY’RE SPOTTY. THEY’RE MOVING THEIR WAY EASTWARD. THIS IS A LIVE LOOK OUTSIDE IN STOCKTON. THE FOG IS NOT TOO BAD. VISIBILITY HERE AROUND 3 TO 4 MILES. TEMPERATURES ARE IN THE MID 50S FOR SACRAMENTO, STOCKTON AND MODESTO. SO A MILD START FOR US. TEMPERATURES JUST TWO DEGREES ABOVE FREEZING, THOUGH FOR SOUTH LAKE TAHOE NOW IN THE SIERRA TODAY WE ARE EXPECTING PARTLY CLOUDY SKIES. IT’LL BE NICE TO SEE A LITTLE BIT OF SUNSHINE. TRUCKEE AND SOUTH LAKE TAHOE EXPECTING THOSE HIGHS TO TOP OUT IN THE UPPER 40S. THE FOOTHILLS PARTLY TO MOSTLY CLOUDY SKIES, OF COURSE. STILL SEEING A LITTLE BIT OF AREAS OF FOG THIS MORNING, ESPECIALLY AROUND AUBURN. THIS AFTERNOON, THOUGH, MOSTLY CLOUDY AND 61, THE COASTAL HILLS FAIRFIELD YOU’VE GOT A LITTLE BIT OF FOG TO DEAL WITH. MOSTLY CLOUDY SKIES, GENERALLY DRY IN THE AFTERNOON. LAKEPORT, NAPA, FAIRFIELD MAYBE A STRAY SHOWER AROUND 1:00 2:00 FAIRFIELD HIGH TODAY, 62 DEGREES. NOW THE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY EXPECTING DRY CONDITIONS AS WE GET INTO THE AFTERNOON. OF COURSE, ONCE THE FOG LIFTS, WE’LL SEE A LITTLE BIT OF SUNSHINE AND REALLY NICE TEMPERATURES. TOO MILD. IF YOU GOT TO GO OUT AND RUN SOME ERRANDS. WE’RE LOOKING AT HIGHS IN THE MID 60S NOW FOR SACRAMENTO. THE HIGH TODAY 62. AND WE’LL SEE A LITTLE BIT OF SOME SUNSHINE THIS AFTERNOON. BUT ALSO A SLIGHT CHANCE FOR SHOWERS AROUND 3:00. WE’LL HAVE MORE ON THAT COMING UP IN ABOUT TEN MINUTES. BUT FIRST LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT HOW THINGS ARE SHAPING UP ON THE ROADWAYS. BRIAN. AND HEADING OUT ON TO THE ROADS THIS MORNING. EVERYTHING LOOKING PRETTY GOOD ACROSS THE SACRAMENTO AREA, EXCEPT FOR THE CAMERA THAT I’M TRYING TO SHOW YOU RIGHT NOW AT ANTELOPE ROAD. BUT YOU CAN SEE HERE EVERYTHING IS GREEN ALONG INTERSTATE 80. NO PROBLEMS ALONG THE 50 CORRIDOR COMING IN FROM RANCHO CORDOVA, OUT ACROSS THE CAUSEWAY. IT’S ALL CLEAR THERE. CLEARING UP A BIG RIG THAT WAS INVOLVED IN A CRASH WITH AN SUV 99 AT ELKHORN. SO THIS IN NATOMAS PASS I-5, THOUGH, SO IT’S NOT GOING TO BE AN IMPACT FOR ANY DRIVERS HEADING OUT TOWARDS THE AIRPORT. IN FACT, IT DOESN’T REALLY LOOK LIKE MUCH OF AN IMPACT FOR THOSE IN NATOMAS EITHER. I-5 IS LOOKING GOOD AND 99 ALL CLEAR OUT OF ELK GROVE INTO SACRAMENTO THROUGH STOCKTON. A LOT OF GREEN ON THE MAP FOR YOU. 205 IS CLEAR ACROSS THE TOP OF THE TRIANGLE. A LITTLE SLOWING OVER THE ALTAMONT PASS. 25 MINUTES NOW FROM 205 TO 680. AND THEN WESTBOUND I-5 IS ONLY 13 MINUTES ACROSS THE TOP OF THE TRACY TRIANGLE. 205I SHOULD SAY 80 IS A TEN MINUTE RIDE OUT OF ROSEVILLE 50, A 15 MINUTE RIDE FROM FOLSOM 99. WE’RE LOOKING AT NINE MINUTES THERE, AND I-5, AN 11 MINUTE RIDE OUT OF ELK GROVE. BACK TO YOU. ALL RIGHT, BRIAN, THANK YOU. 512 IS YOUR TIME RIGHT NOW. A HOUSE ETHICS COMMITTEE REPORT ON MATT GAETZ COULD BE RELEASED TODAY. THE ALLEGATIONS. THE REPORT DETAILS AND HOW THE FORMER REPRESENTATIVE IS RESPONDING. ALSO, THE SUPER BOWL OF SURFING IN HAWAII. WHAT MAKES THE EVENT SO RARE? AND WHICH SURFER WAS AWARDED THE TOP PRIZE?
