LA PLATA, Md. – Thirty-two Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students from North Point, St. Charles and Thomas Stone high schools attended the annual Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) Stars and Stripes mentoring program at the BEYA conference in Baltimore in February.

Over 400 students preparing for college and current college students majoring in engineering and related fields attended the event to network and learn from nearly 200 flag officers, a senior-level rank, from all military services in career development and mentorship.

After the program, two students from North Point High School spoke at the dinner. Sophomore Isaiah Crockett and Hudson Garrett, senior, both took the stage to present comments to the dinner attendees.

Crockett is known for his entrepreneurial mindset co-founding the Scrub Club, a car detailing and pressure washing service. He is the president of the VEX robotics team at North Point, and vice president of the Purple Boot Mentoring program while holding a 4.0 GPA.

Garrett is a senior with a 4.8 GPA and is a team leader of the VEX robotics club at North Point. He is also the co-founder of the North Point chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Jr. The science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) program aims to help students understand how engineering and technology relate to the world helping to increase their excitement for academic excellence, leadership, technical development and teamwork. In addition to being a featured speaker at the event, Hudson was awarded an inaugural BEYA Mentoring scholarship in the amount of $8,000 to attend an Historically Black University or College (HBCU).
