Ken Hostetler from Crider Mitchell Construction, LLC make adjustments to new archway installed as part of the restoration of the African American Memorial Cemetery
LEWISTOWN — With the help of students, sponsors, and volunteers, the African American Memorial Cemetery has taken another step towards restoration.
A new archway to the cemetery was constructed by students from The Mifflin County Academy of Science and Technology’s welding and fabrication departments.
Through the donation of concrete from Juniata Concrete, the volunteer installation was carried out by Criter-Mitchell Construction.
In a press release from the Juniata River Valley Chamber of Commerce Executive
Director Rhonda Kelley said, “We are honored to recognize the collaboration between local businesses, students, and our community partners who have helped make this project a reality.”
The cemetery, located on Fourth Street near the entrance to the boat launch at Victory Park, is a historical landmark in the community.
The ongoing restoration will ensure that the cemetery remains a place of reflection, remembrance, and honor for years to come, according to the press release.
“This archway not only serves as a symbol of respect and remembrance for those laid to rest here but also represents the collective effort to preserve this sacred space for future generations,” said Kelley.
