In Pittsburgh, former President Barack Obama issued a biting assessment of his successor, Donald Trump, as he rallied for Kamala Harris on last year’s campaign trail, launching his swing state tour with a mix of serious politics and cheeky jibes about Trump and diapers.

Obama, while showing gratitude to campaign field office volunteers, stated his intention to “speak some truths” in light of reports that suggested lesser excitement for Harris compared to his own bids, along with the worrying notion that some Black males might have not voted.

“Part of it makes me think – and I’m speaking to men directly – part of it makes me think that, well, you just aren’t feeling the idea of having a woman as president, and you’re coming up with other alternatives and other reasons for that,” Obama remarked.

He lambasted Trump for routinely demeaning others, indicating such behaviour is no marker of genuine strength. “You’re thinking about sitting out or supporting somebody who has a history of denigrating you, because you think that’s a sign of strength, because that’s what being a man is? Putting women down? That’s not acceptable,” he declared.

Obama made his political offensive in Pennsylvania, which ultimately voted red in the election, initiating his participation in campaign events as the race draws near, with less than four weeks left and many already casting their ballots.

At a University of Pittsburgh rally, he characterized Trump as disconnected from reality and ill-suited to spearhead change in the nation. He labelled Trump a “bumbling” billionaire, stating that Trump had been incessantly complaining about his issues since his first appearance on the golden escalator nine years ago.

He commended Harris as a dedicated advocate who has devoted her life to supporting those in need of a voice and opportunities. He proclaimed, “Kamala is as prepared for the job as any nominee for president has ever been.”

A humorous moment arose during the speech when Obama mentioned: “Or diapers. I remember buying diapers. Do you think Donald Trump ever changed a diaper? ” A supporter responded with: “His own! “, prompting Obama to chuckle and remark: “I almost said that, but I decided I should not say it.”

Obama, who received a warm reception from the crowd, addressed Trump’s all-caps social media posts and his tendency to “rant and rave about outlandish conspiracy theories, delivering two-hour speeches that resemble a jumbled mix of words, much like Fidel Castro’s style a never-ending stream of attempts to sell you things. Who does that? “Obama had a go at Trump for flogging ludicrously priced merch as part of his White House comeback campaign. The gear includes gold trainers with a $399 price tag, a swanky watch costing a cool $100,000 and a “God Bless the USA” Bible going for $59.99.

“He wants you to buy the word of God: Donald Trump edition. Got his name right there next to Matthew and Luke,” Obama cracked up saying. “You could not make this stuff up.”

The crowd was treated to a spin on Obama’s own battle cry from his days chasing the presidency, with “Yes, She Can” taking pride of place above the punters.

Obama took a jab at the former president, ridiculing Trump’s vague debate response about replacing the Affordable Care Act with just “concepts of a plan,” and his running mate JD Vance’s assertions that Trump attempted to “salvage” the law. Obama jested, “Donald Trump spent his entire presidency trying to tear it down. And by the way, he couldn’t even do that right.”
